GANGTOK: Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has instructed the ministry officials to make an initial feasibility study into the proposed Melli-Dentam railway line in Sikkim. The instructions come after a formal presentation made by Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba during a meeting on Monday in the minister's chamber as is gathered from an official release

The proposal describes a new railway route through Melli, Jorethang, Legship, and Dentam in West Sikkim, which are strategically located to be used as an extension of the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project nearing completion. According to Subba, the proposed route is easier to construct because the terrain along the banks of the Rangeet and Kalej rivers is less challenging.

"The minister has directed the officials to promptly complete a feasibility study and prepare a detailed report," Subba shared and expressed optimism over the success of the project for that region.

He emphasized the substantial economic and social benefits of the proposed railway link, which was going to connect Dentam, near the Indo-Nepal border, with the national railway network. He added that the project is likely to enhance the West Sikkim economy by accelerating trade, industrial growth, and job creation.

Subba also highlighted the potential for enhanced tourism, making West Sikkim’s ecotourism and cultural attractions more accessible. Additionally, improved connectivity would bring essential services such as education and healthcare closer to the region’s remote areas, fostering socio-economic development.

Urging the ministry to take up the project on priority, Subba assured that the Sikkim government would provide full support and coordination for smooth implementation. He said the proposed rail line has transformative potential for the western region of the state.
