GANGTOK: A tragic road accident occurred in Tadong, Gangtok, on the morning of December 29, claiming the life of one person and leaving five others injured. The incident happened around 4:30 am when a Mahindra Bolero, traveling from Ranipool to Gangtok, reportedly lost control and crashed into a parked truck on the roadside.

The deceased has been identified as Purna Kumar Chhetri, a member of the Sikkim Scouts, who was seated on the driver's side. He succumbed to his injuries at the spot immediately.

The five injured individuals, which include four men and one woman, were admitted to the Central Referral Hospital in Manipal for treatment. Reports indicate that one of the injured is in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on December 12 successfully evacuated 12 paramilitary personnel who got injured in a road accident near Juluk in the Sikkim sector.

Responding promptly, the Eastern Air Command deployed Cheetah helicopters to the Juluk helipad, located at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, and Mi-17 helicopters stationed in Gangtok. The injured personnel were airlifted to a military hospital in Bengdubi, near Bagdogra.

Officials said that the helipad at Juluk, being particularly small and situated in challenging terrain, added complexity to the operation. Despite these challenges, all 12 personnel were successfully evacuated and reported to be out of danger.
