Sikkim's Naren Gurung Awarded Padma Shri For Contribution To Folk Art

The Padma Shri honors Gurung not only for his talent but also for his dedication to preserving Sikkim's cultural identity. His work has had a lasting influence on the region's cultural scene.

GANGTOK: Naren Gurung, a well-known Sikkimese folk artist, has been awarded the Padma Shri for his exceptional work in the field of art. The 70-year-old has spent more than 60 years preserving and promoting Sikkimese Nepali folk music and dance.

Known as the "Nepali Geet ke Guru Gurung," he has played a key role in keeping Sikkim's cultural heritage alive. He has also helped bring the traditional arts of the Bhutia and Lepcha tribes into the spotlight, both in India and abroad.

Hailing from Soreng district, Gurung is not just a performer but also a radio and TV personality. He has written 30 songs and mentored many young artists. Through his audio cassette releases, he has helped spread folk music in Sikkim and nearby areas.

In addition to folk music, Gurung is a talented bhajan singer, showing his range and commitment to cultural traditions. He has represented Sikkim at events like the Sanjari Concert and has performed in countries such as the United States, the UK, and Kenya, gaining international recognition.

The Padma Shri honors Gurung not only for his talent but also for his dedication to preserving Sikkim's cultural identity. His work has had a lasting influence on the region's cultural scene.

Meanwhile, in a proud moment for Assam, 25 personnel from the state have been honored with Gallantry and Service Medals on Republic Day 2025. A total of 942 awardees were recognized by the Ministry of Home Affairs for their outstanding bravery and dedication in the Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services.
