GANGTOK: A fatal road accident in North Sikkim late on March 15 injured at least ten tourists, of whom three are critical. The accident took place at around 9:30 PM near Pakshep, Forest Dara, Mangan, when a Mahindra Maxx bus carrying the group skidded off the road and plummeted about 100 feet.
The injured tourists, identified as students from IIT Dhanbad in Jharkhand, were en route from Lachung to Gangtok when the vehicle lost control. The group comprised six males and four females, all of whom were enjoying a trip to the region.
Emergency personnel rushed to the spot soon after, and three of the injured tourists were rushed to Gangtok Hospital for immediate medical attention in view of their critical state. The rest of the injured were treated at a local hospital in Mangan.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, focusing on potential factors that made the vehicle lose control. The health of the injured tourists is closely being monitored as they undergo treatment.
This accident has also brought into question serious concerns regarding road safety in the region, and local governments have started reviewing safety procedures and practices for tourist transport. Pending investigations, the community wishes for the quick recovery of those who were injured in this unfortunate accident.
