The goal of the initiative is to increase the state's visibility as one of Northeast India's top film destinations.
On July 10, the Meghalaya Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy, 2025, which is a significant step in making the state a leading Northeast film destination.
After a lengthy consultation process that includes more than 200 stakeholder comments on the proposed policy, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma made the announcement.
To coordinate efforts and market Meghalaya as a top film destination—regionally, nationally, and internationally—the state is establishing a dedicated Film Facilitation Cell with officials from Tourism, Arts & Culture, DIPR, and other departments.
The policy describes monetary rewards and institutional assistance to draw in productions of different sizes:
• Domestic and foreign films: Up to Rs 1 crore, or 25% of the production cost, for movies (in domestic or foreign languages) that promote Meghalaya tourism, with 75% of the filming taking place within the state.
• Local films: Once every two years, each filmmaker is eligible for a Rs 50 lakh funding for Khasi, Pnar, and Garo language films.
• TV and OTT content: Meghalayan-produced TV serials, web series, and original OTT productions are eligible for subsidies.
• Documentaries and short films: Meghalayan films were eligible for grants.
