AGARTALA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost its majority in the Nurpur Gram Panchayat in Kamalpur subdivision, reportedly due to internal differences. Although the BJP won the panchayat in the last three-tier panchayat elections, it failed to retain control of the Nurpur Gram Panchayat for more than six months. The INDIA bloc partners, the CPI(M) and the Congress, jointly took control of the panchayat during a trust vote held on Wednesday, defeating the BJP.
In the nine-member Nurpur Gram Panchayat, the BJP had won five seats, the Congress three and the CPI(M) one. Following the election, the BJP had elected Laila Begum as the Pradhan.
It is learnt that three Congress members, one CPI(M) member and one former BJP member moved a no-confidence motion against the Pradhan. The Panchayat Department subsequently fixed the date for the trust vote.
During the trust vote, Selima Begum of the CPI(M) was elected Pradhan, while Runu Mia of the Congress was elected Upa-Pradhan.
Speaking on the development, Anita Sinha, an expelled BJP member, said the party had expelled her one and a half years ago and that she is now serving as an Independent member of the panchayat.
The newly elected Upa-Pradhan said the panchayat would now be run by the INDIA alliance and expressed hope that residents of the panchayat would benefit under its administration.
According to the report, 14 of the 15 Gram Panchayats in the Kailashahar Assembly constituency are currently under the control of the Congress.
