AGARTALA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated state-of-the-art accommodation facilities for Border Guarding Force (BGF) personnel at the Petrapole and Agartala land ports on Friday.
This initiative is aimed at improving the welfare and operational capabilities of India's border security forces. It underlines the government's commitment to modernizing border infrastructure while promoting trade and regional economic development.
Petrapole is India's largest land port, which plays a vital role as the main gateway for trade with Bangladesh. It accommodates a significant share of the two-way trade, and in turn, the two nations enjoy much prosperity.
The newly developed accommodation facilities at Petrapole are likely to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of border security operations at this crucial trade hub.
Spread over 13,339 square meters, the infrastructures include an Officers Block, Subordinate Officers Block, Jawans Block, and a Women's Block for the Women's Unit. The design integrates the latest facilities like dining rooms, kitchens, and resting zones to provide improved lifestyles for the personnel who would be stationed there.
Agartala land port, Tripura is another critical passage for trade and communication between India and Bangladesh. The newly inaugurated accommodation facility covers an area of 8,093.7 square meters and aims at providing comfortable living conditions to security personnel.
The facilities include a 659-square meter Officers' Block for five officers, a Women's Block housing eight women Jawans and a four-storey block housing 16 subordinate officers and 128 Jawans.
The complex also has a dining hall, kitchen, and a multi-purpose hall to ensure that the personnel have access to all necessary amenities.
These infrastructure developments, which were sanctioned in December 2018 for an approximate amount of Rs 55 crore, reflect the government's commitment to enhancing the welfare of the country's border security forces.
Project Director, Land Port Authority of India, Colonel G.S. Sandhu emphasized that such residential facilities mark a major leap forward in strengthening border management and developing international trade relationships.
The inauguration ceremony has been attended by several high-ranking dignitaries that include BSF Tripura Frontier IG AK Sharma, Agartala Land Port Manager Debasis Nandi, BSF DIG VS Kasana, and more.
The event marks an important milestone in improving living conditions and operational preparedness of India's border security personnel, ensuring they can better protect the nation with the support of regional connectivity and economic development.
