Agartala: The Janajati Morcha, the tribal wing of the BJP in Tripura, strongly opposed the CPI(M)’s tribal arm, Tripura Rajya Ganamukti Parisad (GMP), over its planned 'Raj Bhavan Abhijan' on January 11, 2025. The protest is aimed at addressing tribal issues with the Governor.

Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, Janajati Morcha vice-president Bidyot Debbarma criticized the move, challenging GMP’s concerns regarding tribal welfare. He emphasized the BJP government’s commitment to tribal development, citing the resolution of the 23-year Bru refugee crisis under the BJP-led NDA regime.

Debbarma highlighted that the government had identified 12 tribal-dominated blocks as aspirational blocks to accelerate development in tribal areas. Additionally, he noted that Agartala Airport was renamed after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, symbolizing respect for the tribal heritage.

On village committee elections, Debbarma clarified that delays were due to ongoing efforts to include Bru voters in the electoral rolls. He assured that elections in all 587 village committees would be conducted once the process was complete. Despite delays, he stated that development work in these rural areas continues.

Senior BJP leader Bimal Chakma criticized the Left Front for neglecting the empowerment of the Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), claiming they deliberately avoided granting it more powers.

Chakma called for the passage of the 125th Amendment Bill in Parliament, which promises greater political and economic empowerment for tribal councils, asserting that the BJP remains committed to tribal welfare and progress.
