AGARTALA: The Tripura Kumbh Mela started on Sunday at Kumbhnagar, Ranirbazar, drawing lakhs of devotees, spiritual leaders, and pilgrims to the sacred Dashami Ghat on the banks of the Howrah River. Starting from December 25, the event will continue until January 1, providing a week of spiritual and cultural activities.
It is for the second time that Kumbh Mela is being organized in Tripura. It takes place every three years. At its heart is Dashami Ghat, deemed spiritually to be at par with the Ganga, hosting rituals, prayers, and cultural performances.
Ranjitand Maharaj, the head of the Tripureswari Kumbh Mela Committee, emphasized the mythological importance of the event. According to him, the Kumbh Mela was based on the ancient tale of the Samudra Manthan during the Satya Yuga when a drop of Amrit (nectar of immortality) is believed to have fallen in Tripura.
The site has a temple to Maa Kumbh Kali, where the devotees offer their rituals and take sacred baths in the Howrah River, believed to confer blessings equivalent to the Sapta Sarovars.
Thousands of saints, Naga Sadhus, and monks from all over the country have been attracted to the mela. Rituals and prayers for world peace are performed daily, and community kitchens provide meals to more than 15,000 pilgrims and 2,500 saints every day.
Both the state government and local residents have collaborated with each other to ensure a smooth event. The Kumbh Mela at Tripura celebrates spiritual worship along with cultural heritage. In this regard, the state stands by its tradition yet integrates people together on the platform of common faith and culture.
