AGARTALA: The Airport Authority of India has elevated Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport, also known as Agartala Airport in Tripura, to a higher grade, recognizing its passenger traffic and infrastructure development, according to an official announcement.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued support in upgrading the Agartala airport and for the Centre’s commitment to the state’s progress.
"It has been decided to upgrade the category of the airports—Agartala, Bhopal, Madurai, Surat, Udaipur, and Vijayawada—from grade III to II," the circular reads. The MBB airport, the second busiest airport in the northeastern region after Guwahati airport, manages 14 flights and 4,000 passengers daily.
Saha expressed pride in the upgrade, stating, “It is a moment of great pride that MBB Airport, Agartala, has been elevated from Grade III to Grade II due to its growing passenger traffic and enhanced infrastructure. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his unwavering support for the holistic development of Tripura.”
With this upgrade, MBB Airport will benefit from facilities similar to those of Guwahati’s Lokpriya Bordoloi Airport, according to officials. Additionally, the elevation will grant the airport director greater financial authority and power to initiate projects and development initiatives.
