Agartala: Tripura is set to launch electric train services by February, as work on a key railway electrification project nears completion. The ₹46-crore initiative, started in 2022, aims to integrate the state into the national railway grid, transitioning from diesel-powered trains to faster, more efficient electric rail services.
The electrification covers the vital Badarpur-Agartala route via Dharmanagar. Officials from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) have assured readiness to supply power to the railway transmission lines by February.
Three critical traction substations at Kumarghat, Teliamura, and Udaipur are central to the project. While Kumarghat's substation was completed in 2023, the Udaipur and Teliamura substations are set to be operational by January-end and February, respectively. Each substation will receive 5 MW of power daily, with the capacity to scale up if needed.
The North Eastern Railways (NFR) has already completed electrification work on the Badarpur-Agartala line, except for the Lumding-Badarpur section in the hilly terrain. Efforts are underway to expedite the electrification of this stretch to ensure seamless connectivity.
The project is expected to introduce advanced and faster train services, significantly boosting Tripura’s infrastructure and economy. Enhanced connectivity is anticipated to foster trade, tourism, and overall economic growth in the state and the northeastern region.
Authorities believe the upgraded railway infrastructure will not only improve regional integration but also pave the way for sustainable development, making Tripura a key player in the region's growth story.
