AGARTALA: The Tripura government has launched a major initiative to enhance tourism, focusing on Unakoti, known globally for its intricate rock carvings. Announcing the plan at the Pilak Archaeological Fair and Festival in Jolaibari, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury revealed a Rs. 70 crore project funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Key highlights include the introduction of a toy train service and eco-tourism cottages in Unakoti, addressing long-standing complaints about inadequate accommodation. “This initiative aims to boost tourism revenue and improve livelihoods for locals near major tourist hotspots,” Chowdhury stated.

Additionally, the government plans to establish a tourism circuit in South Tripura, offering package tours to key destinations such as the Pilak archaeological site, Mahamuni Buddhist Pagoda, Maitri Setu, and Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary. “This new system will ensure seamless travel between destinations, complemented by upgraded food and lodging services,” the Minister added.

In response to local demands raised by MLA and Cabinet Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, Chowdhury announced plans for a modern motor stand and ongoing renovations to the tourist lodge in Jolaibari, promising state-of-the-art facilities.

These developments aim to position Tripura as a premier tourism hub while addressing infrastructural challenges and improving local economic opportunities. The comprehensive project reflects the state’s commitment to enhancing the tourist experience and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
