GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has achieved a critical milestone in its continued pursuit of electrification, and it is one step closer to Indian Railways' ambitious goal of 100% electrification and net zero carbon emissions.

So far, by November 2024, the NF Railway has electrified 2,827.74 RKM and surpassed more than 66% of the target set at 4,260.52 RKM. This marks high annual growth in the modernization of rail infrastructure across north-eastern India.

Electrification work has been undertaken in various divisions under NF Railway. Of the above, Lumding tops with 986.76 RKM completed, followed by Katihar (747.12 RKM), Alipurduar (618.75 RKM), Rangiya (433.8 RKM), and Tinsukia (41.31 RKM). On a state basis, Assam tops with the highest electrified track length at 1,401.46 RKM followed by West Bengal at 935.94 RKM, Bihar at 318.87 RKM, and Tripura at 151.58 RKM.

Efforts have also begun in other northeastern states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur, to include balanced development across the region. The NF Railway electrified as much as 921.62 RKM in just the 2023-24 financial year. It is estimated to complete 244.6 RKM this fiscal year by November. From there, it is confident enough to complete 1,573 RKM in 2024-25 and that would be a short journey to reach its targeted aim.

Reputable agencies like Indian Railway Construction International Limited (IRCON), Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), and NF Railway's construction division are conducting the electrification drive. The project has several benefits, including the operation of railways in an environment-friendly way, reduced dependency on fossil fuels, and better speed and punctuality of trains because of seamless traction transition.

This significant progress marks the NF Railway's commitment to transforming the region's rail network into a greener and more efficient transportation system for India.
