GUWAHATI: Star forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie will remain with NorthEast United FC for the 2024-25 season, having triggered a contract extension following a spectacular debut year in Indian football.

The Moroccan striker originally signed a deal that included an optional second year, contingent on meeting specific performance benchmarks — all of which he surpassed in style. Ajaraie not only met those criteria but also expressed a strong personal desire to stay with the club and build on the momentum of a historic season.

The 32-year-old enjoyed a sensational first campaign, scoring 29 goals and providing 10 assists across 32 appearances in all competitions. He announced his arrival with a goal on debut in the Durand Cup against Border Security Force FC and went on to play a decisive role throughout the tournament. His contributions in the final — including a goal, an assist, and a successful penalty in the shootout — helped NorthEast United lift their first-ever major trophy.

Ajaraie’s impact was even more pronounced in the Indian Super League (ISL), where he netted 23 goals and delivered 7 assists in just 25 matches. His prolific form earned him both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball, capping off the season with a memorable hat-trick in a 6-0 rout of Mohammedan SC in the Kalinga Super Cup. Reflecting on his decision to stay, Ajaraie said: "I feel at home here. NorthEast United has embraced me, and the support from my teammates, coaches, and the entire club has been incredible. I'm proud of what we achieved, and I'm excited to push for even bigger titles next season."
