CWG 2022: Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga Wins Gold In Men's 67kg Final

New Delhi: Jeremy Lalrinnunga won India's fifth medal in the men's 67 KG final of weightlifting at the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.

Lalrinnunga lifted 140 kg in the snatch and created a new Commonwealth Games record.

He also lifted a total of 160 kg in the clean and jerk segment to finish with a grand total of 300 kg, which is also a new CWG record.

Notably, this is India's second gold medal in this Commonwealth Games.

Lalrinnunga lifted 136 kg in the first attempt of the snatch round. In the second attempt, Jeremy lifted 140 kg and later tried to lift 143 kg in the third attempt, however, he could not succeeded.

The 19-year-old, from Aizawl in Mizoram, also got injured while lifting weights during, but he did not give up and clinched a gold for the country.

On the other hand, Samoa's veteran lifter Vaipava Ioane won the silver medal by lifting a total of 293 kg weight.

So far, India now has a total of 5 medals in the Commonwealth Games 2022, while this is India's third medal in weightlifting.

Before Lalrinnunga, Sanket Sargar, Gururaj Pujari, Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Devi have grabbed medals for the country.

Lalrinnunga had clinched gold in the 2018 Youth Olympics, and in the 2021 Commonwealth Championships.
