ITANAGAR: In a significant boost for grassroots football in Arunachal Pradesh, former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, along with his team from Bhaichung Bhutia Football School (BBFS), kicked off trials and assessment sessions for young footballers in Mebo sub-division under East Siang district of the state.
The initiative, aimed at identifying and nurturing local talent, was inaugurated in the presence of Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, ADC Sibo Passing, EAC Nancy Yirang Modi, and members of Kiyit-based youth group ‘Yondip,’ among other public leaders.
The training camp, which will run until March 21 at Kiyit village playground, has already registered over 250 young footballers from across the state, including participants from Doimukh in Papum Pare district.
Open to both boys and girls aged 13 to 19, the program focuses on football fundamentals, skill enhancement, and discipline. The camp is sponsored by the MLA, covering footballs, nets, jerseys, food, and other training essentials to support young athletes in his constituency.
Addressing the aspiring players, Bhutia emphasised the importance of training, discipline, and dedication in building a successful football career.
“For the past 15 years, we have trained young footballers at BBFS, and many have gone on to represent India and play in professional leagues. Your MLA, has told me about the immense talent in Arunachal Pradesh, but many of you lack access to structured training. This initiative, inspired by discussions during my last visit to Pasighat for the Northeast Connect Conclave, aims to bridge that gap,” the ace footballer said.
Encouraging the players, Bhutia shared his own journey, saying, “If I could make it to the Indian team from a small village like Tinkitam in South Sikkim, why not you? Football greats like Sunil Chhetri, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi are still playing at the highest level even at 40. With the right training and dedication, you too can achieve great things. But no one becomes a star overnight but hard work and discipline is key.”
Bhutia also recalled playing alongside Arunachal’s own Gumpe Rime and urged young footballers from the state to seize the opportunity to make their mark in Indian football.
