Santosh Trophy: Wins for Arunachal, Nagaland, Assam lose to Goa in opener

GUWAHATI: Assam lost their opening game to Goa by a solitary goal in a cluster III match of Santosh Trophy Football Tournament at Kokrajhar today. The all important goal of the match was scored by Stendly Teotonio Fernandes in the 49th minute of the game.

Home team went into the ground with strong support from the local crowd as nearly 5000 spectators were present to watch the game and they cheered for the local outfit till the end.

Both sides made some good moves in the first half but failed to change the score line. However Goa settled the match in favour of them immediately after the start of the second half. The match was 49 minute old when Stendly Teotonio Fernandes received the ball and he capitalized the opportunity taking the error of Assam defence.

Assam tried to return the goal and coach Vikrant Sharma made four substitutions, three of them came in the 74th minute, but Goa managed to hold the lead and collected three points from the match.

In their next game Assam will face Arunachal Pradesh and the match will be held on December 30.

In other matches of the day, Arunachal Pradesh edged over Tamil Nadu 2-1 while Nagaland beat Uttar Pradesh 1-0 at KDSA playground.

Cemar Loya and Tapi Hakhe scored for Arunachal while S. Tamilselvan netted for Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, Kevisanyu Peseyie scored the winner for Nagaland.

Biswajit Daimary, the speaker of the Assam Assembly, attended the inaugural ceremony as Chief Guest at SAI SAG Centre. The welcome address was given by CEM of BTR Pramod Boro.
