HALLE: Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 8 seed, won against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Halle Open at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime put up a fight in the first set but was ultimately overpowered by Khachanov, who continues to prove himself as a serious contender on grass.

Despite his solid performance in recent months — including semi-finals in Hamburg and Stuttgart — FAA couldn’t match the Russian’s consistency and power in key moments.

Khachanov, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, sealed the win with aggressive baseline play and strong serving. The Russian, ranked No 22, will face Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry next who stunned fourth seed Russian Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

No 7 seed Tomas Machac moved into the quarter-finals by beating Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-3.

Machac, ranked No 23, will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Kazakh Alexander Bublik next.

In other matches, 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev beat Quentin Halys 6-2, 7-5 while Flavio Cobolli beat Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (5). Agencies
