GUWAHATI:The 38th edition of the National Games concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony in Haldwani on Friday. Services emerged as the best team in the competition, securing 121 medals. Meanwhile, Assam finished 24th in the medal tally with a total of 34 medals.
Assam sent a contingent of over 200 athletes and officials, competing in 22 disciplines. The state managed to win medals in 11 sports, namely Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Wushu, Weightlifting, Aquatics, Taekwondo, Cycling, Archery, Badminton, Netball, and Athletics. The highest number of medals came from Boxing, Lawn Bowls, and Wushu. Assam bagged two gold medals in Boxing, while the other gold medal came from Lawn Bowls.
Among the North Eastern states, Manipur had the best performance, finishing 11th with 55 medals (14 gold, 16 silver, and 25 bronze). Arunachal Pradesh narrowly edged out Assam, securing 23rd place with 13 medals (4 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze).
Meanwhile Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma received the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) flag from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and IOA Chairperson PT Usha during closing ceremony, in presence of Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr.Mansukh Mandaviya. This moment marked the official handover to Meghalaya as the host of the 39th National Games. This milestone paves the way for Meghalaya to host the prestigious event in early 2027, coinciding with the state’s 55th year of statehood.
The Meghalaya delegation, led by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, included Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, John F Kharshiing, President, of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), and athletes and coaches from across the state. It may be mentioned here that Meghalaya collected five medals including a gold in the 38th National Games.
