GUWAHATI: The 70th Inter District Badminton Championship got under way in the city today. Altogether 586 players from 21 districts are taking part in the championship in 21 events.
The inaugural function was held at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium which was attended by veteran sports organizer Nani Dutta as the chief guest. Assam Badminton Association today felicitated Dutta for his lifetime contribution to the development of sports in the State. He received a citation and a cheque of Rs 50,000 along with gamocha and cheleng chadar.
In a brief speech Dutta said, "Assam Badminton Association produced several national and international players along with renowned organizers since its inception and I hope the good work will be continued in the coming days also. At the same time I thanked the association to give me such an honour."
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by the secretary of the Assam Badminton Association Omar Rashid, joint secretary Diganta Buragohain, vice president Badan Chandra Bora, Binit Gogoi, former shuttler Deep Barua, veteran sports organizer Pradip Hazarika and others.
The competition, to be concluded on August 11, will be simultaneously held at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium and Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor stadium at the RG Baruah Sports complex.
