GUWAHATI: Athletes from Assam, who represented India in the recently concluded 19th Asian Games held at Hangzhou, were felicitated in a glittering function held at the DTRP Indoor Stadium here today. The event was jointly organized by Assam Olympic Association and Assam Amateur Boxing Association.
Altogether seven athletes from the State were part of the Indian contingent which took part in the Asian Games. Lovlina Borgohain (Silver, 75kg women boxing) and cricketer Uma Chetry (gold) returned with medals. The other participants were Shiva Thapa (boxer), A Priya Devi (Sepak Takraw), Amlan Borgohain (Athletics), Shivangi Sarma (Swimming) and Ashmita Chaliha (Badminton).
The governor of Assam Gulab Chand Kataria attended the event as the chief guests and he also felicitated the athletes. Pranamika Bora, who was the coach of the Indian women boxing team, was also felicitated in the same function.
The secretary of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) Lakhya Konwar announced in the function that AOA will give cash awards to all seven athletes and coach Pranamika Bora. Lovlina will receive Rs 1 Lakh and other six athletes will earn Rs 25,000 each. Pranamika will collect a purse of Rs 20,000.
The event was also attended by Director General of Police (Assam) GP Singh, Secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association Hemanta Kalita and Additional Secretary of Sports and Youth Welfare Department Saranga Pani Sarma.
Meanwhile, talking to The Sentinel at the side line of the event Lovlina Borgohain today said that she was aiming to bag a medal from Asiad and very happy to reach that goal. The boxer’s next target is to collect her second medal from the Olympics in Paris and that too a gold.
