GUWAHATI: Assam added three more medals in their tally on Day II in Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) at Panchkula today. The first medal of the day was won by Rekhamoni Gogoi. She clinched a bronze medal in the 40kgs category of weightlifting. The other medals came in Thang-Ta which were won by T Elina Singha and E Yaikhomba.
Assam now altogether collected four medals from this edition of the Games which included three silver and one bronze.
Rekhamoni lifted 52 kg in snatch and 57 kg in clean and jerk (total 109 kg) on way to make a podium finish. She missed the silver by a narrow margin to Sandiya Gungli (Arunachal Pradesh). Kajol Sargar (Maharashtra) claimed top honours.
"I am happy with my achievement and I hope to do better in future," Rekhamoni said afterwards, with her coaches, Anup Konwar and Parbati Tamang, both alumni of the National Institute of Sports, in attendance.
The 17-year-old arts student from Badhgari Higher Secondary School in Hatigarh village of the perennially flood prone Dhemaji district in Assam has just appeared for her 11th standard exams and is expecting a promotion to the 12th. She had earlier struck silver at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Apia, the capital city of Samoa in 2019.
Assam won the second medal in the day, which was a silver, through T Elina Singha in Thang Ta(Phunaba Ama Style I). The athlete participated in the U-18 girl's category. Later E Yaikhomba won a silver in Thangta (Phunaba Anisuba, style II) in boy's 56 kg category.
