Assam Wins Three More Silver Medals; Gold Still Elusive

Assam adds three more silver medals to their tally at the 38th National Games, but the elusive gold continues to evade them.

GUWAHATI: The quest for a gold medal in the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand continued for Assam on the ninth day of the competition. Despite securing 20 medals as of Wednesday afternoon, the elusive gold remains out of reach.

Till the time of filing this report, Assam collected medals in six events and stands at 27th place in the medal tally with 12 silver and 8 bronze medals. However, securing a couple of gold medals could significantly boost their position in the rankings.

Karnataka is leading the medal table with 54 medals (28-11-15).

In lawn bowls, Assam had to settle for three silver medals as all its players fell short in their respective final matches on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in boxing, three Assamese boxers advanced to the semi-finals, guaranteeing medals for the state. However, Assam’s football team faced disappointment after losing their semi-final match against Kerala in a penalty shootout.

Lawn Bowls:Assam’s Ritu Das and Suranjan Barua were defeated in their final matches, while the men’s doubles team comprising Biman Nath and Biswajit Khound also fell short in their final encounter. So far, Assam has accumulated three silver and three bronze medals in the lawn bowls event.

Football: The Assam football team put up a strong fight but failed to book a berth in the final. The semi-final against Kerala ended in a goalless draw during regulation time, leading to a penalty shootout. Kerala emerged victorious with a 3-2 win in the tiebreaker, dashing Assam’s hopes for a gold medal in football.

Boxing: Boxing brought some positive news for Assam as three state boxers secured semi-final spots, ensuring three more medals for the contingent. Ace boxer Shiva Thapa dominated his opponent with a commanding 5-0 victory in the 60kg category. Ankushita Boro also advanced to the semi-finals with an identical 5-0 win in her quarter-final match. Similarly, Ikon Mili secured a semi-final berth in the 54kg category with another 5-0 victory.
