GUWAHATI: Former speed star of Assam Abu Nechim Ahmed has announced his retirement from all forms of crickets on Friday. Announcing his retirement Abu said, "I have decided to retire from all forms of cricket. I would like to thank my family, Assam Cricket association, Board of Control for Cricket in India and all my well wishers who have been with me throughout my wonderful journey in the game."
Abu, a fast bowler who could swing the ball both ways, made his first class debut in 2005 against Madhya Pradesh in Indoor. He also represented India in U-19 World Cup same year and displayed a terrific performance in the semi final against England (4-14). He signed off from the Under-19 stage with match-winning returns of 6 for 9 in the final of a tri-nation series against Bangladesh.
The 34 years old pacer also turned out for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengalore in IPL. In first class cricket he picked up 172 wickets from 68 matches. Abu also scripted history in 2011 when he became the first bowler from Assam to pick up a hat-trick in a Ranji Trophy tie against Goa.
The pacer turned out for the last time in the first class cricket in 2022 for Nagaland and the match was held in Kolkata.
Talking to The Sentinel after he announced retirement Abu said, "For the last a few months I was seriously thinking about retiring from cricket and finally decided to quit. It has been a wonderful journey of playing the sports and learning from every ups and downs that came up in the last two decades at various and different levels. I will associate with the game in the coming days also."
