Tezpur: In a landmark development for water sports in Assam, the Yachting Association of Assam (YAA) formally announced the formation of its executive committee during a general meeting held in Tezpur. This initiative marks a new era for sailing in the state, reflecting growing enthusiasm for diversifying Assam’s sporting ecosystem.
The newly constituted executive committee features a distinguished panel of government officials, sports administrators, and passionate individuals committed to promoting yachting as an organized and inclusive sport throughout the state. Devasish Sharma, IAS, has been appointed as the President, while Karabi Saikia Karan, ACS, will serve as Senior Vice President. The Vice Presidents include Lakhinandan Saharia, ACS, Kabita Kakati Konwar, ACS, Pranjit Boruah, Irish Ahmed, ACS, and Tangkwswar Ojha. The role of General Secretary has been entrusted to Pranjal Dehingia, with Popir Pait as Joint Secretary and Lawnita Borah as Treasurer.
Supporting them are Executive Members Nikhamoni Bora, N. Shankar Rao, Priyanka Thakuria, Amarjyoti Bhagabati, Birinchi Pran Konwar, Debasish Hazarika, and Prithiraj Mahanta, all of whom bring diverse experience and expertise to the table.
The formation of the Yachting Association of Assam is not merely a formal step but a strategic move to channel the state’s abundant natural water resources into a structured and dynamic sailing sport culture. With rivers and lakes being intrinsic to Assam’s geography, the association envisions unlocking the immense potential of this natural advantage by nurturing local talent and building infrastructure. The ultimate goal is to establish Assam as a key destination for yachting and sailing in Northeast India.
The YAA’s formation represents a timely and ambitious effort to introduce new sporting opportunities, foster youth engagement, and showcase Assam’s capabilities on national and international water sports platforms. IANS
