GUWAHATI: Goa secured a narrow 9-run victory over Assam in a rain-affected Vijay Hazare Trophy match held in Jaipur on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 183 runs in 30 overs, Assam fell short, managing 173 for 8 in their allotted overs.
Batting first after being invited by Assam, Goa started strong, led by opener Ishan Gadekar, who scored 55 runs off 49 balls, including seven boundaries and a six. However, Assam fought back after Goa lost their second wicket at 96. Thereafter wickets began falling at regular intervals, and Goa was eventually bowled out for 182 in 29.2 overs. The pick of Assam's bowlers was Avinaov Choudhury, who delivered an impressive spell, taking 4 wickets for 28 runs in 6 overs. Mukhtar Husain also shone, claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs in 5.2 overs.
In response, Assam made a shaky start, losing both openers—Abhishek Thakuri (6) and Rishav Das (1)—with the score at just 11. Vice-captain Sumit Ghadigaonkar anchored the innings with a valiant knock of 50 runs off 56 balls, hitting six boundaries. However, regular wickets at the other end derailed Assam's chase. Captain Sibsankar Roy (12), Denish Das (28) and Saahil Jain (22), all failed to capitalize on their starts. A crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 61 runs between Sumit and Denish gave Assam a glimmer of hope, but Goa regained control after breaking the stand. Goa's disciplined bowling in the final overs ensured Assam could not recover, sealing a hard-fought victory. Akash Sengupta remained not out on 23.
It was the fourth-defeat for Assam and the side have collected four points from their five outings.
