GUWAHATI: The All Assam Inter-District Junior (boys and girls) and Elite (men and women) Boxing Championship got under way on Thursday at the Ulubari Boxing Club in the city. The state-level event is being organised in collaboration with the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) and Ulubari Boxing Club.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma formally inaugurated the championship at the club premises in Kachari Basti. Speaking on the occasion, Sarma highlighted the growing prominence of Assam’s boxers on the international stage, crediting the state’s success in the sport to champions like Shiva Thapa and Lovlina Borgohain.
Sarma noted that over the past three decades, Assam’s boxers have consistently excelled at national and international levels, positioning the state as a powerhouse in the sport. He assured that the government would priorities boxing along with other disciplines, and emphasised the state’s commitment to providing modern infrastructure, quality training, exposure opportunities and financial security for sportspersons.
Also present at the inauguration were Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, East Guwahati MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Assam Olympic Association Secretary Lakhya Konwar, and AABA General Secretary Hemanta Kalita among others.
Nearly 400 athletes from 32 affiliated districts under the AABA are participating in the four-day competition.
