Inaugural Assam Chess Premier League from May 24

The All Assam Chess Association (AACA) is set to host the first-ever Assam Chess Premier League, a franchise-based tournament, in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Chess Association (AACA) is set to host the first-ever Assam Chess Premier League, a franchise-based tournament, in Guwahati. The two-day event will begin on May 24 and feature eight teams competing for the title.

The participating teams are: Axom Rhinos Checkmates, Savoy Checkmates, Ranchi Capitals, 91 Yards Club, BTR Warriors, Edu Hub Checkmates, Kalinga Warriors, and Knight Movers.

Speaking to the media, AACA General Secretary Rajib Dhar stated that the auction of players was recently held, during which 56 players were selected from a pool of 350 applicants from across the nation. Assam’s International Master Saahil Dey fetched the highest bid at Rs 53,500 and will represent Ranchi Capitals.

The tournament will also see participation from Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha, along with several of Assam’s top talents such as Chaarvi Choudhury, Tanisha A R Som, Tanmoy Rajbongshi, Abhirup Saikia, Rahul Soram Singh, Mrinmoy Rajkhowa, and Iftikar Alam Majumder.

However, another rising star of Assam Mayank Chakraborty will miss the tournament as he is set to represent India in an upcoming international event. The league will follow a round-robin format so as to draw four teams for the two semi final clashes. The winners in the semi finals will face each other in the title clash on May 25.
