GUWAHATI: Jharkhand defeated Assam by seven wickets in their opening game in Vijay Hazare Trophy held in Jaipur on Saturday. Assam, invited to bat first, posted a decent total of 257-9 in their allotted 50 overs. Jharkhand chased down the target comfortably in 44.3 overs, losing just three wickets in the process. Virat Singh was the star of the game, scoring an unbeaten 108.

Assam had a shaky start, losing Parvez Musaraf without a run on the board. However, opener Rishav Das and vice-captain Sumit Ghadigaonkar steadied the innings with an impressive 134-run partnership for the second wicket. Both players scored half-centuries, with Rishav Das contributing a team-high 78 runs off 113 balls, including seven boundaries and one six. Sumit Ghadigaonkar played a brisk knock of 77 runs off 78 balls, hitting eight boundaries and three sixes.

Other notable contributions came from Denish Das (37), Swarupam Purkayastha (25), and Akash Sengupta (21).

Jharkhand’s chase was anchored by Virat Singh, who played a match-winning innings of 109 not out off 113 balls, decorated with seven boundaries and two sixes. Opener Utkarsh Singh also played a crucial role, scoring 82 runs. The duo ensured that Jharkhand reached the target with ease, completing the chase in just 44.3 overs.
