GUWAHATI: NorthEast United FC has signed Indian striker Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia on a long-term deal, the Indian Super League club announced on Sunday. Lalrinzuala, 23, joins the Highlanders from Aizawl FC after his contract with the club expired at the end of the 2024-25 season and has committed his future to the Highlanders till the end of the 2027 season.

Lalrinzuala impressed with his goal-scoring prowess in the I-League and is known for his intelligent movement, sharp finishing, and high work rate. The striker will add depth and dynamism to Juan Pedro Benali’s squad.

Lalrinzuala rose to prominence in the 2023-24 I-League campaign, where he netted 15 goals and provided three assists, setting a new benchmark for Indian forwards. In doing so, he broke the record for most goals scored by an Indian in a single I-League season, surpassing Sunil Chhetri (2013-14) and Mohammed Rafi (2009-10).

His red-hot form earned him a call-up to the Indian national team camp under then-head coach Igor Stimac. Lalrinzuala followed it up with another strong season in 2024-25, scoring 12 crucial goals for Aizawl FC. Agencies
