GUWAHATI: Staying away from the family for a long period due to training may be a key reason behind the inconsistent performance of the Indian players in national and international arena, feels former Justice of the Supreme Court Dr. Mukundakam Sarma.

Delivering the Pulin Das Memorial Lecture at the India Club premises here today on the 103rd Birth Anniversary of Das, the former justice said, "Talent is not a problem in India. But still we are not getting the desired result. I feel one of the key reasons behind it may be staying away from the family for a long period because of training. It creates a negative impact on the mind of the players. The problems should be sorted out with the help of experts."

India made their best ever performance in the Olympics during the recently concluded Tokyo Games. Dr. Sarma termed it a good sign for Indian sports. However, he doubted that some countries in different parts of the world are perhaps not happy with the rise of Indian dominance in the international sports arena and they may be working to stop the progress of India in International events. WADA put a ban on National Dope Testing Laboratory in New Delhi and we are suffering a lot for it."

Retired justice is also upset to see that games like badminton, table tennis and even football, which once produced a series of quality players in the state, are now a shadow of the past.

He added: "Once we produced top class players in badminton, table tennis and even football on a regular basis. But unfortunately the scenario has changed."

The lecture was jointly organized by the Assam Sports Journalists' Association and Pulin Das Birth Centenary Celebration Committee. Dr. Sarma attended the programme as the chief guest while MLA Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi and Chief Editor of Prantik Pradip Barua were the guest of honour. The meeting was also attended by the president of the Assam Sports Journalists' Association Subodh Malla Barua, president and secretary of the Pulin Das Birth Centenary Celebration Committee Nayan Prasad and Kalyan Kumar Das respectively.

Terming Pulin Das as one of the pioneer sports organizers of the State Dr. Ranbongshi, the former president of Axom Xahitya Xabha, said in the function that works are in progress to keep alive his memories through various manners.

On the other hand, Pradip Barua, who once associated with Das, in his brief speech said, "It was a fact that during the time of Das sports organizers didn't get their due reorganization yet, he managed to keep his focus on the work related to sports development."
