GUWAHATI: Assam finally climed the gold medal in the ongoing 38th National Games in Uttrakhand. Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain added another accolade to her name, securing gold in the women’s 75kg boxing category on Friday while former youth world champion Ankushita Boro gave Assam the second gold medal when she secured a unanimous decision victory over Uttarakhand’s Kajal in the 66kg welterweight category final.
Meanwhile, Shiva Thapa, a six-time Asian champion, had to settle for silver in the men’s 63.5kg division after a narrow defeat. Another Assam boxer Abhinab Saikia was also betten in the final 0-5 against Services opponent and settled with a silver medal.
Competing in her first tournament since the Paris Olympics, Lovlina dominated Pranshu Rathore of Chandigarh with a flawless 5-0 victory, reaffirming her superiority in the ring. In the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg) final, Thapa faced a tough challenge against Vanshaj from the Services Sports Control Board. The contest was closely fought, but Vanshaj edged out a 4-3 win, denying Thapa the top spot.
Assam boxers signed off the campaign with 5 medals.
Assam won two medals in archery today. Tutumoni Bora beat Manisha Kumari of Jharkhand 6-4 in the singles bronze medal match while Arun Boro and Namrata Brahma grabbed another bronze medal in mixed event by defeating Haryana opponent 5-3.
Assam football team missed the opportunity to win a medal after 2007 as they were beaten by Delhi 2-4 in the bronze medal match.
