GUWAHATI: The state government’s decision to provide new ration cards to eligible beneficiaries will bear fruit when they are issued next month.
According to sources in the Commissionerate of Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, the government had planned to add 40 lakh new beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The decision was taken as the issuance of ration cards was held up for more than one year.
For the addition of new beneficiaries under NFSA, the state government collected applications from the public, and they were processed. The applications were scrutinized and 40.15 lakh beneficiaries were selected to receive the new ration cards until November 8, 2023. Of the 40.15 lakh selected, 34.17 lakh applicants were approved. Those remaining on the selected list are having their applications processed for approval.
Out of the 34.17 lakh approved applicants due to receive the new ration cards, 3.70 lakh beneficiaries have their ration cards ready for issue by the Commissionerate. The ration cards for the remaining approved applicants are undergoing the final process before they can be issued to the beneficiaries.
