GUWAHATI: Around 5.31 lakh litres of liquor are sold in Assam on average daily.
State Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya informed the State Assembly of this today. He said, “As many as 3.06 lakh litres of IMFL, 1.66 lakh litres of beer, and 58,000 litres of country spirits are sold daily in the state on average.The department has collected Rs 1,718 crore as VAT during this financial year until August. The state at present has 1,684 wine shops, 896 bars, and 486 outlets of country spirits”.
The Excise Department collected revenue of Rs 2,201 crore in 2022–23, compared to Rs 1,930 crore in 2021–22.
He said, “To check the liquor that enters Assam from the neighbouring states, the process is underway to set up wine shops in the bordering areas in the state. However, barring tourist resorts, we won’t issue licences for bars in rural areas. A process is also underway to issue licences for bars in urban areas based on requirements.
