Guwahati: As part of a major crackdown on anti-national activities, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a total of 71 individuals, including politicians and college teachers, have been arrested for allegedly expressing support for Pakistan while residing in India. The Assam Police cracked down on such elements after they made comments on social media and off such platforms, which went against the national ethos, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and the resultant Operation Sindoor.

The CM said in a post on social media that the arrests have been possible only due to the intensified vigil of the Assam Police on all media, especially social media platforms, and the operations that followed.

“Till now, 71 traitors have been shown the way to the prison,” he said in the Assamese language post.

Among the most recent arrests in this sustained operation are Rupchan Ali nabbed by Kokrajhar Police; Rashid Mondal alias Abdur Rashid, arrested by Goalpara Police; and Raju Sheikh, taken into custody by South Salmara Mankachar Police.

Even as tensions between India and Pakistan have somewhat subsided following a ceasefire agreement, the Assam Police continued their operation against Pakistan sympathisers.

This operation underscores the state’s zero-tolerance stance against any threat to national integrity. The Assam Police have confirmed that monitoring will continue intensively, especially across digital platforms, to root out any content or behaviour that compromises national unity.
