GUWAHATI: As a New Year gift, the State Government is going to run a fleet of 200 electric buses in Guwahati and its outskirts. ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) will operate the buses.

The State Government ordered 200 electric buses to Tata and Olectra not to add to the pollution level in the city. Diesel buses are infamous for air pollution. Both Tata and Olectra have started the delivery of the vehicles in phases. ASTC has received 60 of the 200 electric buses ordered, and it expects to receive the remaining buses by December this year. The corporation is planning to operate the buses in January 2024. These buses will be in addition to the fleet of 100 CNG buses operational in Guwahati and its outskirts.

Since electric buses need recharge, they are not suitable for long distances. These buses will be operational in Guwahati and its nearby areas only. ASTC has decided to set up charging stations at five spots: Jagiroad, Baihata Chariali, Mirza, ISBT at Betkuchi in Guwahati, and ASTC Workshop at Rupnagar in Guwahati for electric buses.
