Guwahati: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) is keen on filing a fresh petition before the Supreme Court for the re-examination of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was published on August 31, 2019. Currently, the AASU leadership is discussing the matter with their legal advisers.

Significantly, around 19 lakh people were not included in the final NRC. The updating of the NRC was carried out under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

AASU general secretary Samiran Phukon told The Sentinel, "We suspect that the names of some ineligible people were included in the final NRC. When the draft was published, the names of over 40 lakh people were left out. But, in the final NRC, the figure came down from 40 lakh to 19 lakh. We think there are more than 19 lakh people who are ineligible for the final NRC. After the publication of the final NRC, we had petitioned the Supreme Court to re-examine the final NRC. However, recently, the Supreme Court disposed of all cases related to the NRC. So, we are left with no other option but to file a fresh petition before the Supreme Court. Discussions are going on with our advocates to initiate the process for filing the petition."

Phukon went on to say that 860 people were martyred during the six-year-long Assam Movement. Only an error-free NRC will bring peace to the souls of the martyrs, he stressed.

The total applicants in the NRC updating process was 3.29 crore. An NRC was first prepared for Assam in 1951. At that time, there were around 80 lakh names in the NRC. This NRC was updated as per the directions from the Supreme Court.
