GUWAHATI, Feb 16: The Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) which has been in talks with the BJP about the possibilities of a pre-poll alliance through seat sharing, is likely to go it alone in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Rank and file AGP workers have been unhappy with the alliance talks, publicly venting their disappointment and anger at party leaders. Some AGP leaders too are reportedly not in favour of any alliance, believing that the regiol party should go it alone in the electoral battle.

The AGP’s central executive met at its head office in Ambari where several leaders opposed any alliance with the BJP. They were of the opinion that if the party goes for such an alliance, it will suffer a major setback and its very existence will be imperiled.

The AGP has called its General House meeting on Wednesday, which happens to be the highest body of the party. The General House will take up the issue of electoral alliance.

It may be mentioned that if the AGP decides to go it alone in the election, it will be a major setback for the BJP which has been trying to forge an anti-Congress alliance. However, it will be a major relief for the Congress, which desperately wants the AGP to fight alone, so that anti-Congress votes are split.

Today’s Central Executive meet was attended by most senior party leaders including president Atul Bora, former president Brindaban Goswami, working president Keshab Mahanta, Thaneswar Boro, Pradip Hazarika, Utpal Dutta and Phanibhushan Choudhury. However, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta couldn’t attend the meeting as he is unwell following a road mishap which occurred last week.
