GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the students of Assam should know the Assamese language. "It is better to know one of the tribal languages, besides Hindi and English," he said.

The Chief Minister said this before the media today to dissipate misgivings in Assam after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement at the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in New Delhi on Friday.

The Chief Minister said, "We have received no letter or direction from the Centre for making Hind a compulsory or optional language in Assam. Assamese is the mother language in Assam. We have already prepared the four-language policy in the state after discussion with the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) and other tribal Sahitya Sabhas. However, we have not yet implemented the language policy following objections from the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS)."

The Chief Minister said, "Shah said that students should learn Hindi. We also want it. Shah never said that the students of Assam should learn Hindi instead of Assamese. He said that a student should know Hindi next to the mother language to communicate better while working and studying in states like Delhi, UP, Maharashtra etc."
