GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a total of 1.39 lakh bighas of land have been made free from encroachers so far. He said that there would not be any 'Miyanland' in Assam. “Such a land can be either in Bangladesh or in Afghanistan,” he said.
Speaking to the media here today, the Chief Minister said, "Earlier we freed 1.29 lakh bighas of land from encroachers. We freed 10,000 more bighas of land from encroachers in the recent eviction drive in the Uriamghat area. With this, the total area of land made free from encroachers is 1.39 lakh bighas. I would like to thank Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for cooperating with us in the eviction drive in Uriamghat. Nagaland Police and the CRPF have helped us in the eviction drive."
When asked about a section of evicted people raising the issue of a 'Miyanland' in Assam, the Chief Minister said, "There can be a Miyanland. We've no objection to that. However, that will be in Bangladesh. If need be, we'll help them. Bangladesh has vast lands. If Bangladesh has problems, we help make them a Miyan Land in Afghanistan."
On forest lands in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said, "We are conducting a survey to ascertain the number of non-indigenous people staying in forest land in Guwahati. We haven't conducted any survey of the indigenous people. The survey is of the people who have been changing the demography of the capital city. The indigenous people will get land pattas through Mission Basundhara 3.0. The Assamese and tribal people have no reason to worry. This government is not going to evict indigenous people. The population pressure in Guwahati is staggering. If the capacity of the city is ten lakh, the city has twenty lakh people. Hence, we need to vacate lands in Guwahati as well, someday."
