Posts created in 118 tea garden model schools

Guwahati: In a major administrative move in the Department of School Education, the Assam government has abolished 944 vacant posts of Intermediate Teachers (UP and LP Teachers) across 25 districts. These posts belonged in erstwhile schools that had been amalgamated with secondary schools. Against the abolished teachers' posts, similar posts were created for headmasters and graduate teachers in a total of 118 tea garden model schools in 19 districts.
This was stated in a notification issued by the Director of Secondary Education (DSE). The notification says that the decision was approved by the Department of School Education via a letter dated April 21, 2025, aligning with the proposal submitted by the DSE through a letter towards that end. The move is aimed at streamlining the teaching structure within the Tea Garden Model Schools.
In place of the abolished teachers' posts, the Department has sanctioned the creation of an equal number of posts for headmasters and graduate teachers across 118 tea garden model schools. This restructuring is intended to enhance the quality of education and ensure better administrative efficiency in tea garden schools.
The abolished posts of teachers were for subject teachers like Arabic, Hindi, Craft, Assamese, and other subjects. All of the 944 posts of teachers were non-active posts, sources said.
The district-wise teachers' posts abolished were 31 in Barpeta, 25 in Biswanath, 17 in Bongaigaon, 139 in Cachar, 8 in Darrang, 13 in Dhemaji, 6 in Dhubri, 36 in Dibrugarh, 22 in Goalpara, 23 in Golaghat, 27 in Hailakandi, 24 in Hojai, 135 in Jorhat, 114 in Kamrup, 41 in Kamrup Metro, 24 in Lakhimpur, 9 in Majuli, 25 in Morigaon, 28 in Nagaon, 2 in Nalbari, 97 in Sivasagar, 22 in Sonitpur, 5 in South Salmara-Mankachar, 58 in Sribhumi and 13 in Tinsukia district.
In place of the abolished posts, the number of Headmasters and Graduate Teachers posts created in tea garden model schools in the districts is as follows: 9 in Biswanath, 4 in Cachar, 4 in Charaideo, 1 in Darrang, 2 in Dhubri, 19 in Dibrugarh, 8 in Golaghat, 2 in Hailakandi, 7 in Jorhat, 1 in Kamrup Metro, 2 in Karbi Anglong, 4 in Lakhimpur, 1 in Morigaon, 4 in Nagaon, 5 in Sivasagar, 13 in Sonitpur, 5 in Sribhumi, 22 in Tinsukia district and 5 in Udalguri district.
