Assam: BJP, AGP Announce Candidates for Rajya Sabha Polls on June 19

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR: While the BJP named its state secretary Kanad Purkayastha as a candidate for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election in Assam, the AGP decided to field Birendra Prasad Baishya again for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats. The Rajya Sabha poll in the state is slated to be held on June 19, 2025.

Kanad Purkayastha is the son of former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha. Speaking to the media, Kanad thanked the Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state BJP president Dilip Saikia for having faith in him. He also thanked the party's central leadership.

"Assam is not just my home; it is my inspiration, my strength. To be considered for such a significant responsibility is both a great honour and a humbling moment in my political journey," Kanad added.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, "We hope to retain both the Rajya Sabha seats."

According to the election notification issued on 2nd June, the last date for filing nomination papers is June 9; scrutiny of nomination papers is on June 10; the last date of withdrawal of candidature is June 12; the poll is on June 19 from 9 am to 4 pm; and counting is on the same day after 5 pm. The election process is due to be completed by June 23, 2025.

There is a total of seven Rajya Sabha seats in the state. The Electoral College for Rajya Sabha comprises members of the state legislative assembly.

State BJP president Dilip Saikia welcomed Kanad Purkayastha for getting the Rajya Sabha ticket.
