Guwahati: The Special Judge in CBI Court, Guwahati, sentenced Wahed Ali, a former record arranger of Gauhati High Court, to 6 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs 1.8 lakh in a case of defalcation or embezzlement.

More than Rs 38 lakh was embezzled by Wahed Ali through fraudulent withdrawal of manipulated T.A. bills, as established by a CBI investigation.

The CBI had registered the instant case on October 15, 1996, against Wahed Ali, the then Record Arranger, Gauhati High Court & others on the basis of the complaint of the Registrar (Judicial), Gauhati High Court, on the allegation of defalcation of Rs. 81,000 by Wahed Ali, Record Arranger, who was deputed to the Treasury and bank to collect money. It was alleged that sensing danger of action against him, the said accused record arranger deposited Rs. 81,000 by treasury challan, and he allegedly submitted a letter stating that he would refund the excess amount if any drawn by him from the treasury.

The CBI investigation established fraudulent withdrawal by the accused against T.A. bills by manipulating or tampering with original figures or by adding a bogus name and amount in the bills. Accordingly, a total amount of Rs. 38,88,050 was embezzled.

After completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed by the CBI on September 5, 2000, against the accused, including the accused who has been convicted and sentenced by the court.
