Assam: Centre approves setting up of an IIM in Guwahati

The central government has approved the setting up of an IIM (Indian Institute of Management) in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI: The central government has approved the setting up of an IIM (Indian Institute of Management) in Guwahati. This IIM will be the second in the Northeast and the 22nd in the country. The first IIM in the Northeast is in Shillong.

Informing this to the media, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the last Union Cabinet meeting had approved the setting up of an IIM in Guwahati. With the setting up of this IIM, Assam will have the complete set of flagship institutions. The IIM will be established at Palasbari. The institute will start classes from the next academic session with a makeshift arrangement. IIM Ahmedabad will monitor the temporary arrangement, he said.

Spelling out the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting yesterday, the Chief Minister said that the Cabinet accorded post-facto approval to the procurement of 500 MW of power from the Ministry of Coal at Rs 5.79 per unit for 25 years to provide affordable power to the people. The cabinet also approved a 1,500 MW pumped storage project in Karbi Anglong.

The cabinet approved the financial sanction of the remaining amount of Rs 325 crore for the implementation of Mukhya Mantrir Ayushman Asom Yojana in 2025-26 to ensure the continuation of cashless medical treatment to beneficiaries.

The cabinet has approved the amendment of the Assam Unified Building Construction (Regulation) Bylaws, 2022, to facilitate the development of industries and encourage the construction of green buildings.

The Cabinet has approved the reclassification of eight proposals for regulation of reclassification and transfer of lands for non-agricultural purposes under the Mission Basundhara 3.0 in Dhubri and Biswanath districts.

The Chief Minister said that the schools, naamghars and other non-profitable institutes that got lands under Mission Basundhara 3.0 are to pay a premium at the rate of Rs 500 per bigha only. However, profit-making institutions like private schools and colleges will have to pay the fixed zonal values, he said.
