GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today filed a criminal defamation case against Manoj Chauhan, Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and the party's co-in-charge of Assam, in the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup Metro in Guwahati.

On February 11, during a press conference in Guwahati, Chauhan alleged that Dr. Sarma had invested money in shopping malls and hotel businesses in Dubai and Singapore. In light of these unfounded allegations, the CM has now filed a criminal defamation case against the Congress leader. Following Dr. Sarma's petition, the court registered the case under CR 78/2025 and issued a pre-cognisance notice to the AICC secretary. Additionally, the court has summoned Chauhan to appear before it on March 17.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sarma has also decided to file a civil defamation suit against the Congress leader, a press release said.
