Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP is a ‘common man’s party,’ and a candidate for any major post in the party does not have to belong to any royal family or come with connections and recommendations of big leaders, unlike the Congress or other political parties.

Speaking at the function where the new state president, Dilip Saikia, was unanimously selected, the Chief Minister stated that any common worker can become the president or secretary of the party at the state or national level. On Saikia’s selection as the president, he said that Saikia does not come from any distinguished family but became the president due to his own capabilities.

“In our BJP party, nobody becomes the president on the basis of his family background but on the strength of the qualities and capabilities of a worker. Our party stands for service to commoners, not for royal families. This is the difference between the BJP and other parties. Except for Ranjit Dutta, all other state presidents come from a general family in Assam. To us, family is not first, the national service is first, and so is party interest second, and self interest is always last. In the last four years, there have been many changes in party posts, but there is no single instance of any objection or protest by any worker or leader. However, this is not possible in other political parties, which see frequent infighting,” the CM said.

“There are 65 lakh primary members of the BJP in the state. They became members of their own choice. So, I believe that the BJP has the blessings of the people. That is why the BJP will always continue to be a common man’s party,” he added.

“There are many challenges before Dilip Saikia as the state president. We will contest the Panchayat election, autonomous council elections, and the Assembly election under his leadership. Our target in the 2026 Assembly election is 100 seats for the BJP-led alliance and 75 for the BJP alone. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led alliance got the maximum votes in 94 of the 126 constituencies, as compared to other parties. So, we are hopeful that the alliance will win more than 100 LAC seats in the 2026 election,” the Chief Minister further said.
