GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma spelt out the mantra of ‘people friendly, swift and smart’ policing for the Assam Police to define its activities.

Speaking to the media after the marathon two-day meeting with the SPs and other high-level police officers at Lachit Barphakan Police Academy today, the Chief Minister said, “Three traits – people friendly, swift and smart – should define Assam Police and its activities in the coming days. It was a very productive conference. We have discussed the roadmap of the Assam Police regarding law and order, investigations and convictions, and reforms for the year ahead. We reflected upon the recent successes of the Assam Police focused on inter-district learning.”

The Chief Minister said that the Assam Police were successful in busting the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh gang that killed elephants, busted mobile SIM card rackets, fake currency rackets, etc., last year. “The war against drugs is not a cakewalk. The menace needs a long-term war. The police caught drug dealers and peddlers and need to reach the masterminds now.

The police had to put on hold when all investigations reach their dead ends in Myanmar,” he said, adding, “We’re committed to adopting the zero-tolerance policy in infiltration, wildlife hunting, women abuse and drugs.”

The Chief Minister said, “We’ve asked the police to accomplish their public-centric services properly. I urged the officers to treat senior citizens and women with special care in police stations if they land there. We also discussed how the newly created Department of Prosecution will add more teeth to the force and further improve conviction rates alongside discussion on the state prison reforms.”

The Chief Minister said, “As newer forms of threat emerged, we should be prepared to deal with them accordingly to ensure that the environment of safety and security prevails in Assam. The government is fully supporting the modernisation efforts of the force with more institutions, more personnel and more facilities to improve the quality of policing and the quality of life of our personnel.”
