GUWAHATI: The power demand in Assam will be around 5,000 MW by 2030. Aligning with the state government’s vision of meeting its power demand and achieving self-reliance in power generation, the state government has been laying stress on solar and thermal power. Several power giants signed MoUs to set up power projects during Advantage Assam 2.0 in the state.
As part of this broader view, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the proposed site for the 3400-MW thermal power plant at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in the Bilasipara Co-District today.
The Chief Minister inspected the site, which spans over 3,300 bighas, and assessed its viability as a potential location for the state’s upcoming power generation project.
During the visit, he reviewed various aspects of the site and interacted with some of the residents settled in the area. He assured them of giving rehabilitation grants as per the provision of the government.
With Assam’s energy demand projected to rise significantly, reaching an estimated 5,000 MW by 2030 and 7,000 MW by 2035, the state government is actively working to transform Assam into a regional hub for thermal power generation. In line with this objective, the State Cabinet, on May 5, 2025, approved the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025, aimed at attracting large-scale investments in the sector. A 3400 MW thermal power plant will be established at the proposed site, and a tender for the project will be floated shortly.
The Chief Minister said that once the plant becomes operational, it is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth. He said that those legally residing on the proposed site will be adequately compensated and rehabilitated. He also sought cooperation from the people to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
The Chief Minister said that the local people of Parbatjhora subdivision in the Kokrajhar district have been staging protests against the proposed solar power project in the area. “If the local populace does not want the power plant there, we will relocate it elsewhere,” he said.
