Guwahati: A huge 3,661-page charge sheet was filed on Monday by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell (CM’s SVC) against senior IAS officer Indreswar Kalita, who is currently incarcerated in prison since his arrest on January 29, 2025. The charge sheet was submitted in connection with a 131% disproportionate assets case against the officer, pointing to illegal accumulation of wealth, well beyond his known sources of income.

Indreswar Kalita, Secretary to the Government of Assam in the Excise Department, had been placed under suspension with effect from the date of his arrest. He was arrested earlier following a long investigation into assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. According to sources, Kalita and his family had amassed properties and wealth amounting to Rs 5.64 crore, a sum that investigators say is disproportionate to his salary and emoluments by over 131%.

Multiple landholdings belonging to him have been unearthed in prime localities of Guwahati, like Lokhra, VIP Road, Zoo Road, and Garchuk. More property linked to him was discovered in Tezpur. Kalita sought to present many of these properties as gifts bestowed on him in a move aimed at downplaying the scale of corruption indulged in by him.

His wife, meanwhile, has also been named as a co-accused.

Kalita is under suspension vide an order issued by the Department of Personnel.

He was arrested by the CM’s SVC in connection with the Vigilance P.S. Case No.02/2024 under Section 13(1)(b)/13(2) and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Meanwhile, the CM’s SVC has also filed a charge sheet against Girin Bhuyan, then Nutrition Officer in the Social Welfare Department. An SVC case (no. 01/2009) was registered against him. The charge sheet was filed in two parts—one for misuse of government funds and the second relating to possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
