Guwahati: Assam has made substantial progress in implementing rural road connectivity projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), with thousands of roads completed under the first two phases of the scheme. Implementation of PMGSY-III in the state has, however, been lagging, and the completion deadline for the pending works has been extended up to March 31, 2027.
Under PMGSY-I, a total of 8,365 roads covering 26,792 km were sanctioned. Of these, 8,355 roads covering 26,778.80 km have been completed. Only 8 roads covering 13.44 km remain pending. Of the remaining works, four roads covering 8.42 km are in the process of being foreclosed.
Under PMGSY-II, Assam has completed almost all sanctioned works. Out of 250 roads covering 1,716.44 km, 249 roads covering 1,716.39 km have been completed. Only one road measuring 0.05 km remains to be completed.
Progress under PMGSY-III, however, remains comparatively slower. A total of 654 roads covering 4,232.72 km were sanctioned, of which 550 roads covering 3,686.72 km have been completed. As many as 104 roads covering 546 km are still under execution.
The implementing agency for PMGSY roads in the state is Assam PWD (Roads).
The completion deadline for the pending PMGSY-III works has been extended up to March 31, 2027, giving the Assam PWD additional time to complete the remaining rural road projects.
The progress is significant for Assam, where PMGSY has been a major programme for improving all-weather road connectivity to rural and remote areas.
